DEVELOPERS CO-OP MEETING NOTES

Date of meeting: September 28, 2010

SIG leaders: Golda Velez and Dave Parizek

Location: Spoke6

GENERAL DISCUSSION

Golda asked Francis about his three lectures, and he will email her the links for his lecture/presentation notes on:

"Virtual Machines", "Cloud Computing", and "Using a Webcam".

Francis stated that he just completed the installation of "Apache Web Server" running in a "Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop" virtual machine running in "VMware Player 3". He stated that he posted the procedure for setting up this server at

http://aztcs.org/meeting_notes/linuxsig/apache/apache.htm

One attendee stated that his employer is moving from "Windows XP" to "Windows 7" and they are repeatedly testing equipment that has weekly revisions to its software.  Keeping track of the various versions is necessary and a "virtual machine" would reduce the amount of legacy physical computers that he has to maintain.  He is using "VisualBasic 6" and changing to something else, maybe "Visual Basic .NET" or "C#" or something.

Golda mentioned that Intuit is mostly .NET now.

Golda mentioned that "VMware vCenter Converter Standalone" is a free software utility that can be used to convert physical computers into virtual machines that will run under most of VMware's products including the free ones.

Francis told them about "Paragon Go Virtual" which was recommended by Steve Hernandez. Francis stated that an extensive discussion of both conversion utilities can be found at

Dave talked about providing assistance for a client to search a table of contents of research papers and books at

http://www.evolutionary-ecology.com

The client wanted to be able to make his own changes to the site, so he didn't want to have any code that was too complex.  Dave chose to use the "JQuery" Javascript framework.  He had several questions:

Searching for

2009(6)

caused problems.  The problems appeared to the be caused by the

(.

Golda suggested adding a

\

before the

(.

Dave stated that changing to uppercase slowed the search too much in Internet Explorer but not in other browsers.  Members decided to change the search to either a lower-level Java Script or use PHP script on the server side that calls for that one thing.

The client also wanted to assign a number to each work for intellectual property reasons using a new "Direct Object Identifier" (DOI) product, which is different from "Uniform Resource Identifier" (URI) because it does more than URI.  Dave added "span class article" to the list but it was not consistent enough.  Dave asked about what output to give to the client.  Members said he would love Excel output to test (CSV).  Golda said there is a new program from MIT called "Exhibit" that she would like to learn so she would help him if he wanted to use that.  Members noted that parsing CSV files was difficult as you must turn all the quotes to comments.

Dave said he might like to repair Apple computers if he could get them cheap enough.  Golda said that Safford Magnet School was using the old Apple IIe for their text teleprompter and needed more of them.  Francis recommended that he contact Todd Jameson to ask Todd about his successful Mac repair business:

One attendee asked about which Javascript Framework he should use.  JQuery, Yahoo User Interface Library (YUI), and Mootools were mentioned, but attendees agreed that JQuery has the most acceptance.

Golda showed her new "Bteaching" Web site, for parents to help them teach basic skills to their kids. This new site is located at

http://bteaching.com/

She demonstrated the "Cooperative Bingo" reading game at
