INSTALLING "UBUNTU ULTIMATE EDITION 2.7" INTO "VMWARE PLAYER 3"

 

OBJECTIVE AND DESIRED RESULT:

Install "Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.7" as a virtual machine guest operating system running inside the totally-free "VMware Player 3" which runs as an application inside a "Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop"  computer.

 

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS:

 

Step 1:

Click on "Applications" on the main menu bar of "Ubuntu":

 

Step 2:

Click on "System Tools" on the drop-down menu of "Applications":

 

Step 3:

Click on "VMware Player:

 

 

Step 4:

The "VMware Player" window will be displayed:

A list of the "virtual machine" operating system "guests" that you have installed  will be displayed here.

 

 

Step 5:

Click on "Create a New Virtual Machine":

 

 

Step 6:

A "New Virtual Machine Wizard" dialog box will be displayed:

 

 

Step 7:

Use this initial dialog box to tell "VMware Player 3" where the installation media for the "Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop" is located. You can either tell it to use an physical DVD or CD disc drive or an *.iso image file.

 

Step 8:

If a popup dialog box says that "A volume with software packages has been detected', click on it's "Cancel" button:

 

 

Step 9:

Click on the "Next" button of the "New Virtual Machine Wizard" dialog box:

         

 

Step 10:

Type in your desired "full name".

Type in your desired "username".

Type in your desired "password" twice.

Click on the "Next" button:

 

Step 11:

Type in a descriptive name for the virtual machine.

Then click on the "Next" button:

 

 

 

 

 

Step 12:

Set the "Maximum disk size" for the virtual hard drive of the new virtual machine.

The actual disk space that is occupied by the virtual hard drive of the new virtual machine will be much smaller that the "Maximum disk size". The "Maximum disk size" is the maximum of disk space that the virtual hard drive can eventually grow into.

 

 

 

 

Step 13:

Click on the "Next" button:

 

 

Step 14:

Click on the "Customize Hardware.." button:

 

 

Step 15:

Click on "Memory":

 

Step 16:

Set the memory for the virtual machine.

The recommended amount is usually too low:

 

 

 

Base the memory setting on the requirements of the operating system that you are installing. Remember to leave enough memory for the host operating system.

If you only have 2 gigabytes of RAM, set the memory for the virtual machine to 900 kilobytes.

If you have 3 or 4 gigabytes of RAM, you should probably split the RAM evenly between the amount of RAM for the virtual machine and the amount of RAM that remains for the host operating system:

 

Step 17:

Click on the "OK" button:

 

 

 

Step 18:

Click on the "Finish" button:

 

Step 19:

If you get any dialog boxes about additional hardware that can be connected to your new virtual machine, click the "Finish" button:

 

 

Step 20:

If you get a the following notice, click on it's "Download and Install" button:

 

 

 

Step 21:

Then you will get some status boxes about the status of the download of "VMware Tools":

Step 22:

If a "permission box" is displayed, type in the password that is associated with the Ubuntu username that you are logged in as:

Step 23:

A dialog box will notify you when the installation of "VMware Tools.." is complete:

 

 

Step 24:

Click on the "X" button in the upper left-hand corner of this dialog box.

 

Step 25:

Click on the "Install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS" button:

 

 

Step 26:

Select your time zone:

 

 

 

Step 27:

Click on the "Forward" button in the lower right-hand corner of  the "Keyboard layout" box:

 

 

Step 28:

A "Prepare disk space" box will be displayed:

 

 

Step 29:

Select the "Erase and use the entire disk" option.

The "entire disk" is just the virtual hard drive that is being provided to this virtual machine.

 

 

Step 30:

A "Who are you?" box will be displayed:

 

 

Step 31:

Type in your desired "name" and "username".

Type in your desired password twice.

Modify the "name of this computer" if you do not like the one that is generated for you:

 

 

Step 32:

A ready to install box will be displayed:

 

 

Step 33:

Make sure that you agree with everything in the "Ready to install" box.

Click on the "Advanced" button if you wish to make any changes.

Then click on the "Install" button in the lower right-hand corner of the "Ready to install" box:

 

Step 34:

A "Welcome to Ultimate Edition" box will be displayed:

 

 

 

Step 35:

A white status bar will be displayed below the "slide show" while the installation progresses:

 

 

Step 36:

The various "slide show" slides are as follows:

Step 37:

An "Installation Complete" box will be displayed on top of the dramatic gold splash screen of "Ubuntu Ultimate Edition":

 

Step 38:

Click on the "Restart Now" button of the "Installation Complete" box:

 

 

Step 39:

During the startup of "Ubuntu Ultimate Edition", the dramatic gold splash will be displayed for a few seconds:

 

 

Step 40:

A login box will be displayed as follows:

 

 

Step 41:

Double-click on the "username" that you wish to log in as.

 

Step 42:

A password field will be displayed:

 

 

 

Step 43:

Type in the password for your username.

Then click on the "Log In" button.

 

Step 44:

The "Ubuntu Ultimate Edition" desktop will be displayed.
