FROM A DATA CD OR DVD

TO

A USB "THUMB DRIVE"

OBJECTIVE AND DESIRED RESULT:

Copy files/folders from a data CD or data DVD to an USB "thumb drive" in "Windows XP", "Windows Vista", or "Windows 7".

GENERAL INFORMATION:

The following step-by-step "how to" shows how you can copy files from a data CD or data DVD to a USB thumb drive in Windows. The illustrations show you how the various windows look in "Windows XP". However, the actual steps are also applicable to "Windows Vista" and "Windows 7".

STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE:

Step 1:

Insert the data CD or data DVD into the DVD/CD drive of your computer.

Step 2:

At this point, a “Windows Explorer” window might pop up and display the contents of the data CD or data DVD, as follows:

Step 3:

If a “Windows Explorer” window pops up and it displays the contents of your data CD or data DVD, please go to “Step 8” now.

If a “Windows Explorer” window does not pop up and display the contents of the data CD or data DVD, use the left mouse button to click on the Start button (on the left end of the gray (or blue) Windows “Task bar”).

Step 4:

Then use the left mouse button to click on “My Computer” on the right column of the “Start Menu”.

Step 5:

A “Windows Explorer” window called “My Computer” will be displayed:

Step 6:

Use the left mouse button to double-click on the icon that represents your CD or DVD drive:

Step 7:

The “Windows Explorer” window will now display the contents of the data CD or data DVD:

Step 8:

Insert your USB “thumb drive” device into a USB port.

Step 9:

At this point, a “Windows Explorer” window might pop up and display the contents of the USB “thumb drive”, as follows:

Step 10:

If a “Windows Explorer” window pops up and it displays the contents of your USB “thumb drive”, please go to “Step 15” now.

If a “Windows Explorer” window does not pop up and display the contents of the USB thumb drive, use the left mouse button to click on the Start button (on the left end of the gray (or blue) Windows “Task bar”).

Step 11:

Then use the left mouse button to click on “My Computer” on the right column of the “Start Menu”:

Step 12:

A “Windows Explorer” window called “My Computer” will be displayed:

Step 13:

Use the left mouse button to double-click on the icon that represents your USB “thumb drive”:

Step 14:

The “Windows Explorer” window will now display the contents of the data CD or data DVD:

Step 15:

You should now have two “Windows Explorer” windows available:

One window represents your data CD or DVD drive

and

the other window represents the USB "thumb drive".

If you are missing the window that represents the data CD or DVD drive, repeat steps 3 through 7.

If you are missing the window that represents the USB "thumb drive", repeat steps 10 through 14.

Step 16:

Move and re-size the "Windows Explorer" window that represents your data CD or DVD drive so that this "Windows Explorer" window occupies the left half of your monitor screen:

Step 17:

Move and re-size the "Windows Explorer" window that represents your USB "thumb drive" so that this "Windows Explorer" window occupies the right half of your monitor screen:

Step 18:

You should now have two windows displayed side by side:

The left Window represents the data CD or DVD.

The right Window represents the USB thumb drive.

Step 19:

To copy files or folders from your data CD or DVD drive to your USB "thumb drive", drag them from the left window to the right window.

Step 20:

When you are done with copying files and folders from the left window to the right window, close out each of the two "Windows Explorer" windows by click on the "x" button near the upper right-hand corner of the window.
