RESTORING A FAILED COMPUTER WITH "MACRIUM"
Insert the Macrium "Rescue CD" into the CD or DVD/CD drive of the computer. (You might have to use a paper clip to pop open the tray of the CD or DVD/CD drive.)
Using a USB, Firewire, IDE/PATA, SATA, or eSATA cable, attach the hard drive where the Macrium backup image files are located.
Apply power to the failed computer.

*

*
Click on the "Next' button.
*

*
Note in this example, that my external hard drive called "ExtHD1" is shown as the C: drive.
Do not worry!
This is because my C: hard drive has failed and the "Restore Wizard" of "Macrium" decided to call it the D: drive in this initial screen.
We will ignore the drive letters that are displayed in this initial and use the names of the drives to the "backup image files" that were previously created with "Macrium".
In this example, I clicked on the drive called "ExtHD1".

*
Then I scrolled to the right using the vertical scroll bar:

*

*
Click on the folder where the "backup image files" are located.

*
The desired "backup image" should be highlighted in the upper right-most window pane.
If there is more than one backup at this folder location, click on the one that you wish to use.
In this case there was only one backup dated Febrary 6, 2010 since I always put a backup image into it's own unique folder which is a good policy to adhere to.
Click on the "Next" button:

*
Place a checkmark next to the partition that you wish to restore.
In this example, I placed a checkmark next to the "System Reserved" partition.

*
Click on the "Next" button:
*

*
Place a checkmark next to the physical hard drive where you want to partition to be restored to.
In this example, I placed a checkmark next to unallocated space of "Disk 1", since "Disk 2" is called "ExtHD1" and represents the external hard drive where my "backup image files" were located:

*
Click on the "Next" button.
*

*
(In "Windows 7", if there is a "System Reserved" partition, it has to be the "Active" one.)
Click on the "Next" button.

*
Click on the "Next" button.
*

*
Select the "No Thank You" option.
*

*
Click on the "Next" button.
*

*
Select the "Replace with the Master Boot Record from the backup (Recommended)" option.

*
Click on the "Next" button.
*

*
Select the "No. Do not check at reboot." option.
*

*
Click on the "Next" button.
*

Click on the "Finish" button.
*

*
Click on the "OK" button in the "Reflect" box.
*

*
If you need to restore additional partitions, click on the "Back" button.

If you need to restore additional partitions, click on the "Next" button.
*

*
Click on the drive where the "image backup files" are located:
Notice that a C: drive is now shown and the external drive that is called "ExtHD1" is now the D: drive.
*

*
Click on the folder where the "image backup files" are stored:
*

*
Click on the desired backup, if more than one is displayed in the selected folder.
Then click on the "Next" button.

*
Place a checkmark on the partition that you wish to restore:
*

*
Click on the "Next" button:
*

*
Place a checkmark on the "area" where you want the partition to be restored to:
In this case, we again selected "Unallocated" space on "Disk 1" since "Disk 2" is the external hard drive where the "backup image files" were located.
*

*
Click on the "Next" button.

*
In our example, the partition where the "Windows" folder resides has to be "Primary" so "Macrium" has selected the correct "New Partition Type" for us.
Click on the "Next" button.

(You only make adjustments in the "Destination Resize" dialog box if you want the new partition to be bigger or smaller than the original one that was one your computer.)
Click on the "Next" button.

*
Note that "No Thank You" has already selected for you since that is what we selected in the previous partition restore.
Click on the "Next" button.

Note that "Replace with the Master Boot Record from the backup" has already been selected since that is what we selected for the previous partition restore.
Click on "Next".

*
Note that "No. Do not check at reboot" has already been selected since that is what was selected for the previous partition restore.
Click on the "Next" button.
*

*
Click on the "Finish" button.
*

*
*

*
Click on "OK" in the "Reflect" box:
*

*
Click on the "Back" button if there are more partitions that need to be restored.
Otherwise, click on the "Cancel" button.

*
Click on the "OK" button in the "Reflect" box to make the computer reboot.
*

*
The restored hard drive partitions of your computer should now permit it to reboot into the Windows "Desktop".
